You may try your absolute hardest to forgive them. You may tell yourself that they just had a bad childhood or they’re just under a lot of stress at work. You constantly cover up their cruelty with your own hope. But God will not let you stay blind forever. He loves you too much to let you live in a lie.

Every single time you try to believe that fake apology—every single time you convince yourself that the nightmare is finally over—their real face will come out again. And it will not just be subtle. It will be undeniable: their absolute cruelty, their deep selfishness, their petty jealousy over your success, their freezing coldness when you’re crying, and their total lack of remorse. Everything will repeat in front of you.

God will force the mask to slip in the most obvious ways. You will catch them in lies that make no sense. You will see them treat you with complete disgust right after they promised they loved you.

This happens because you can no longer call it confusion. In the beginning, you were confused. You wondered if you were doing something wrong. But God will keep showing you the same brutal truth because you keep trying to cover it up—because it’s painful. You’re trauma-bonded.

He will make their toxic behavior so blatantly clear that you won’t be able to make excuses for them anymore. You will realize that you’re not forgiving a person who made a mistake. You are unconsciously enabling a person who is making a choice.
