So how frustrating is it to watch a narcissist skate through life, hurting other people without any real consequences—or a care in the world? It’s pretty frustrating. But even though narcissists seem untouchable, and it seems like they’re never getting what’s coming to them—never getting their karma—there are things that do hurt a narcissist. And that’s exactly what we’re talking about today.
But I want to be clear: I’m not talking about revenge. Revenge is almost never a good idea. It’s very difficult to get revenge without getting your hands dirty, and even if you do get away with it, you know you’re not walking away with a clear conscience. I always recommend taking the high road and walking away with your integrity intact.
Signs a Narcissist Is Hurt
But with that said, before we get to the things that hurt a narcissist, I want to talk through some evidence that a narcissist may be hurt. It’s not always obvious. They’re not necessarily going to tell you, “I’m hurting right now,” and be honest and vulnerable about it. If they’re telling you they’re hurting, more often than not they’re trying to manipulate you.
So the first thing you’ll notice when a narcissist is hurt is that they will retaliate. This is another reason why I don’t recommend actively going for revenge—you’re starting a battle, and where does it end? But I can tell you this: if you did not hurt their fragile ego, they would not bother retaliating. There’s always going to be something in it for them—in this case, revenge.
