The same golden child who obeyed him for years was suddenly being cursed to his face. I remember my grandfather praying for his destruction and blaming my uncle for absolutely every problem in the world in his family.
Why do they do this? Imagine a sinking captain drilling holes in his own lifeboat. When a narcissist is drowning, their need for a punching bag becomes greater than ever. It becomes greater than their need for a loyal friend. They have so much bitter anger inside them that they will unleash it on whoever is standing closest to them—even their biggest supporter.
When you see them destroy their own fan club, you know they are completely out of options.
Two, they put on a fake holy mask just to show the world, “Oh, I’m so godly. I can do nothing wrong.” When a narcissist loses control in the real world, they look for a shortcut to gain power back. And instantly—and unfortunately—in today’s times, what is that one easy way to pretend to be religious? Extreme religion.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, they become incredibly holy. They start quoting scriptures, praying loudly where everyone can see them, and dressing in religious clothing. They do not do this because they have found God, which is what they want you to believe.
But they do this because religion acts like an invisible shield. I had a narcissistic roommate, which I have talked about many times in different videos, who did this perfectly. His life is completely falling apart. A major collapse was happening internally right in front of my eyes, and he had absolutely zero control over his life anymore.
He was failing. So what did he do? He put on a religious robe by playing the role of the holy man. He found a way to get easy control over other people’s perceptions. Strangers would see the robe and literally bow down to him. They gave him instant respect and validation without him having to earn it.
My grandfather did the same thing exactly as well—to hide his cruelty—because he was a psychopathic narcissist.
For a narc, pretending to be highly religious is like using a cheat code in a video game. If they act like a saint, nobody’s allowed to question their bad behavior. If you point out their lies, they will tell you that you are fighting against God, not against them. But this is just cardboard armor. When they have to hide behind religion just to get a simple ounce of respect, it proves that their real life influence is completely dead.
Three, they pick fights with powerful authority figures and lose. A narcissist spends their whole life bullying people who are trapped with them—like their partners, their children, or their employees—because they get away with this for so long, they start to believe they’re invincible.
They genuinely think they’re above the law. But when their life is crashing, they start picking fights with people they cannot control. They will scream at a police officer. They will throw a temper tantrum in front of a judge. They will insult a powerful boss.
