Number three: they set their own life on fire. They sabotage their success just to blame the wreckage on your toxic influence. This is the kamikaze phase of the defeated narcissist. When a narcissist realizes they cannot win, they decide that no one will. If they cannot have the life they wanted, they will ensure that the life they do have is a smoldering ruin that they can point to as proof of your negativity.
They will intentionally sabotage their own career, their health, or their other relationships just so they can play the ultimate victim. They set their own life on fire because they need a new narrative. They need the world to see them as a broken, tragic figure who was destroyed by your toxic presence. They would rather be a failure who was wronged than a winner who has to admit they were the problem. This is a ruthless form of spite; they’re willing to suffer, lose money, and lose status as long as they can use that suffering as a weapon to punish you with lifelong guilt. They cannot stand you because your success and stability highlight their internal rot.
Every time you thrive, it proves that the relationship was not the problem; it was them. So they choose to fail. They choose a wreckage. They will burn down the house just to complain about the smoke. They hope that the world will look at the ashes and blame you for holding the match. It is the ultimate act of psychological terrorism, destroying themselves to ensure you never have a moment of peace.
Tactic 4: The Void Stare
Number four: they use a wide stare to treat you like a ghost and act as if you have already been erased from the physical world. There’s a moment in the defeat of a narcissist where they simply switch off. When the rage no longer works and the hoovering fails, they adopt the void stare. This is beyond silent treatment; this is depersonalization. They will look right through you as if you’re made of glass. They treat you like a ghost—an entity that has already been erased from their reality.
This is a defensive mechanism designed to protect their ego from the agonizing reality of your victory. If they acknowledge you as a human being, they have to acknowledge the pain they caused and the defeat they suffered. So what do they do? They choose to kill you in their mind. They enter a state of cold, clinical indifference. They will walk past you in the same house or sit across from you at the table and act as if the seat is empty. This is meant to trigger your deepest fears of abandonment and insignificance.
They want you to beg for a reaction, to scream for them to just see you. But the void stare is a message that says you no longer exist because I have decided you don’t. They cannot stand you because your presence is a constant reminder of their loss of power and control. By treating you like you’re already dead, they perform a symbolic execution of your influence. It is the ultimate wall of black rock silence, where they retreat into a mental bunker where you never happened.
